Welcome to Point Pearce Aboriginal Corporation

Welcome to Guuranda;

Home of the Narungga People | Point Pearce Aboriginal Corporation.

Situated on the northern coastline of Guuranda (Yorke Peninsula), the Point Pearce Aboriginal Community is part of the ancestral homeland of the Narungga people, whose connection to this Country stretches back thousands of generations.

This is a living cultural landscape – one of rich coastal waters, sand dunes, ochre cliffs, native bushland, and sacred sites, extending from the mainland across the waters to Waraldi (Wardang Island).

For countless generations, Narungga people have cared for this Country. The rhythms of life, guided by the seasons, stories, and Songlines, shaped strong family and kinship systems, sophisticated knowledge of land and sea, and a deep spiritual relationship with place. This connection continues today and remains central to our identity, responsibility, and community resilience.

A History of Survival and Strength

The colonial history of this area is marked by disruption and dispossession. In 1868, Point Pearce was established as a Lutheran Mission on Narungga land. It was one of several missions set up across South Australia to isolate and control Aboriginal populations under the guise of protection and religious conversion. Narungga families were moved onto the mission and subject to restrictive policies, including control over movement, culture, language, and labour.

Despite these hardships, Narungga people survived – resisting assimilation and holding onto culture, identity, and community ties. The mission became a site not just of loss, but of resilience – where language, cultural practice, and family were protected and passed on, often in secret.

Reclaiming, Revitalising, Rebuilding

Today, the Point Pearce Aboriginal Corporation stands proudly as a community-led organisation grounded in Narungga culture and guided by the aspirations of its people. We work to protect and revitalise our cultural heritage, to care for our land and waters – including Waraldi – and to strengthen the social, environmental, and economic wellbeing of our community.

Our story is not one of the past – it is a living, ongoing narrative of cultural resurgence, self-determination, and community pride.
